Our History
S. J. Clark and Son is a family owned business that started in the early 1900’s in Monterey, California; it began when John Henry Clark partnered up with his son, Stanley James Clark Sr., who later paired up with his son, Stanley James Clark Jr. to carry on a family name and tradition. S. J. Clark and Son started with a lot of local government and private sector jobs. They worked on The Canneries, Fort Ord, and had quite a fuss made over them when they built the first modernized office building in Monterey, the 4-story A.C. Hinkle structure at Del Monte and Tyler in August of 1927. S. J. Clark and Son’s founders also had a hand in building the Bixby Bridge, as well as the monumental Hearst Castle. The company quickly became one of Monterey’s major contractors- enabling them to flourish and procure work all throughout the central coast, as well as northern and southern cities throughout California.
Backed with this rich history, the present S. J. Clark and Son officers have been fortunate enough to branch out and gain the knowledge and experience to add that much more sophistication to their trade. Whether it’s been any and all aspects of fine carpentry work, ceramic tile, stone slabs, welding fabrication, to having a hand in multi-million dollar projects- S. J. Clark and Son has always prided themselves on being “specialized at not being specialized.”
This is a company that works for their clients. Their knowledge of the trade and amicability has led to many repeat clients. S. J. Clark and Son are craftsmen who are builders of the old way and have pride in their work and it shows in the products they create. S. J. Clark and Son General Contractors are a local company that is here to stay.
